Kari Higgins

College Attended:
Monmouth College, a small liberal arts college in Monmouth, Illinois.

Years as a teacher: 10

I grew up on a small farm in west central Illinois. I knew from a young age that I wanted to be a teacher. My mom taught for over 35 years, so I spent a lot of time in her classroom when I was younger.

I graduated in 2005 and spent the next six years teaching third grade at a small Catholic school. I moved to the St. Charles area in 2011 after marrying my husband, Brian. I was blessed to stay home with our son Henry for a few years before returning to the classroom in 2015.

Some of my favorite things are my family, the movie Steel Magnolias, tacos, and reading children's books.

I love traveling and hope to one day visit Italy, the Holy Land, the Vatican, and as many beaches as I can.

I love teaching second grade at St. Charles Borromeo. Second graders are a lot of fun. They grow so much as learners throughout the year and are very excited to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Communion.

Joann Hynes

B.S. University of Illinois

M. Ed University of Missouri St. Louis

M. Ed Reading University of Missouri St. Louis

Number of year teaching: 42 years

Growing up in Champaign, Illinois, home of the University of Illinois, Joann’s elementary and junior high years were infused with the newest strategies from the university’s education department.  Participating in the university studies coupled with innovative classroom teachers not only inspired Joann to become a teacher, but were models for her student centered teaching style.

For the past 41 years, Joann has shared her passion for learning and teaching with students from kindergarten to the post graduate level. Finding her way to teaching middle school literature at St. Charles Borromeo has proven to be the most exciting and satisfying time of her career. While walking by her class, you may hear the strains of a current song or movie being used to introduce a literary element, or the room could be strewn with scraps of paper as students create projects which reflect a piece of literature, or the words of Shakespeare are being recited from the stage in the back of the room.

Joann loves teaching, but her husband and two daughters are the light of her life.

What you love about teaching or your current position:

I try to be a positive influence for my students.  I enjoy teaching things that they will need to be successful in life.  I love when a struggling student finally understands a concept.

I also enjoy sewing, quilting, gardening and leading my daughter's Girl Scout Troop.  I am the parish organist at St. Francis of Assisi.
